MDOT begins Hwy 49 roadway enhancement project at Camp Shelby

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - This is a news release from MDOT

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has recently begun a roadway enhancement project involving 3.4 miles of U.S. Highway 49 from U.S. Highway 98 to Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg.

MDOT awarded the $11.5 million project to T.L. Wallace of Columbia, MS.  The project will involve increasing shoulder widths in the median and along the outside roadway.  Work will include redesigning the median crossovers to improve sight distance and drainage.

“MDOT was tasked by the state legislature to construct this roadway enhancement project at Camp Shelby several years ago and we are proud to see this important project come to fruition,” said Transportation Commissioner Tom King.

In a few months, traffic along the southbound lanes will be reduced from two lanes to a one lane temporary detour to improve the sight distance at the Ralston Road crossover.  Later, traffic will be impacted at Southgate and Ollie Williams Road so that crews can install signal improvements at the intersection.  All other daily traffic impacts will be temporary lane closures.

The project includes ITS improvements which will allow for traffic monitoring and collection of real time data.  Final work on the project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2016.
