LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The Laurel Police Department and the Laurel School District will be awarded a second state level award Wednesday for their Healthy Heroes' Initiative.
The Mississippi Association of Partners in Education will present them with the Governor's Award of Distinction during their Governor's Awards luncheon in Philadelphia. This is a statewide competitive award which has made history for both the school district and the department.
The Laurel Police Department said the judges were so impressed by their Healthy Heroes' Initiative, they insisted they win the divisional award as well. This also made history as no entry in the history of the awards program has ever been awarded both awards.
Visionaries to the initiative include Mayor Johnny Magee, Chief of Police Tyrone Stewart, City Schools Superintendent Dr. Chuck Benigno and Shelia Grogan, Executive Director of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Mississippi.
The Healthy Heroes' Initiative involves uniformed police officers visiting 3rd and 4th grade students in a classroom environment where they engage the students on conversations regarding nutrition, exercise and how to make those first steps toward a healthy lifestyle. Officers actively exercise with the kids to show them the proper exercises to increase agility, endurance and strength. The initiative was funded by a grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation in 2012 and has since been funded by the Laurel Police Department.
