HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - This weekend, Southern Miss students are enjoying spring break, but next Saturday, hundreds of students will spring into action to help the community as part of the 5th annual Big Event.

That's a campus-wide, community service activity that gives students the opportunity to help local service and charitable organizations.

About 600 students are expected to take part on March 21.

The Big Event began on the campus of Texas A&M University.

"It's one event, but you want (students) to get this thing in their head that says, you know, I want to go back there, I want to serve in a different way, I want to be able to go back and make a long-term investment, so that's what the Big Event is about," said Wynde Fitts, associate dean of students at Southern Miss.

The students will volunteer with 20 different organizations during the Big Event.
