LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - There are eight candidates for the Jones County District 3 constable position and all are running as republicans.
One of the candidates is Laurel Police Department Lt. Jim Thornhill who was guest speaker at the Jones County Republican Women's Meeting Wednesday.
Lt. Thornhill said he started in law enforcement in 1994 and has been with LPD since 2002. He spoke to Republican Women members on gun safety and his candidacy.
"For a constable you don't have to have any law enforcement experience," said Lt. Thornhill. "Of the eight candidates that are running I'm the only candidate that is currently a full-time employee of the police department, so I'm a full-time officer still working every day."
Lt. Thornhill is known for the Shop with a Cop program at LPD, he is also a current board member for the animal rescue league.
"I'm a transplant, I'm not from Jones County," said Lt. Thornhill. "I've been here forty years but I chose this place as home so what better thing can I do than protect the people that are my friends and I live with."
Lt. Thornhill has also served as a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Officer. He now serves as a patrol supervisor.
