Cord Cockrell Named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week

This is a news release from Southern Miss Athletics.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – For the second week in a row, a Southern Miss baseball hurler has been named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week in an announcement by the league office in Irving, Texas.
Golden Eagle junior right-hander, Cord Cockrell of Duson, La., collects the honor after registering a seven-inning victory last Wednesday night in a 5-1 triumph at home over the No. 22 ranked Ole Miss Rebels.

In his first start for the Golden Eagles, Cockrell did not surrender a run to the Rebels until the seventh inning, not letting a base runner get past second base until the seventh frame. He retired eight of nine batters at one point during the contest. Cockrell, who transferred from UL Lafayette, sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Cockrell gave up just five hits and a walk over those seven innings and fanned five in the contest. This season, he has posted a 1-0 record with a 3.86 earned run average. Cockrell has allowed four runs on 10 hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over 9 1/3 innings in three appearances this season.

Southern Miss senior right-handed pitcher James McMahon won the honor last week for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles continue their nine-game homestand Tuesday when they take on South Dakota State. Game time is set for 6 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
