Southern Miss Ends Season with 72-61 Defeat at Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech went on a 10-0 second half run to put the game away, as Southern Miss fell, 72-61.

With the loss, Southern Miss ends the season at 9-20, 4-14 in Conference USA.

Shadell Millinghaus led all scorers with a career-high 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Matt Bingaya had nine points and 10 rebounds and Chip Armelin had nine points and eight boards.

Southern Miss began the game when Armelin found Matt Bingaya down low for a dunk. Kenneth Smith tied it with a layup, and after a steal, hit Michale Kyser for an alley-oop. A minute later, Armelin hit a three to give the Golden Eagles a 5-4 lead, 2:19 into the game.

After the teams traded baskets, Alex Hamilton's jumper propelled Louisiana Tech to a 10-0 run and a 16-7 lead, with 14:20 to play in the first half. However, Southern Miss came right back. Armelin hit a layup and Carey scored six straight points. Kevin Holland and Shadell Millinghaus then hit back-to-back three-pointers, capping off a 13-0 run and giving the Golden Eagles a 20-16 lead with 11:37 to play.

Raheem Appleby made a jumper, but a minute and a half later, Armelin made a driving layup. Jacobi Boykins then bookended an 8-0 run with three-pointers to take a 26-22 lead with 4:33 to play in the half. Armelin then found Carey for a layup with 3:56 to play, but the game remained scoreless the rest of the half, and Southern Miss trailed by two at the break.

Eric McCree converted a three-point play to start the second half. Bingaya made one-of two free throws, but Appleby made a pair. The times twice traded baskets before Kyser made a pair of free throws, and after Keljin Blevins missed a dunk, Appleby made a jumper to push the lead to eight.

Bingaya hit Carey for a dunk to pull Southern Miss to within 39-33, with 15:06 to play. But, Appleby drained a three, sending the Bulldogs on a 10-0 run and a 52-37 lead with 11:19 to play.

Millinghaus made two free throws, but Xavian Stapleton answered with a layup. Millinghaus made a layup, and following a Kyser turnover, Bingaya hit a layup.

After the teams traded baskets, McCree drilled a three-pointer. Armelin then hit Chapman for a layup and Millinghaus made a jumper to cut the deficit to 59-49 with 5:09 to play. But, the Bulldogs scored seven of the next nine points, sealing the game.

Southern Miss shot 45.5% (25-of-55) from the field and 35.7% (5-of-14) from three. Louisiana Tech was 27-of-61 (44.3%) from the floor and just 21.4% (6-of-28) from three.
