JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A Sandersville man charged with animal cruelty was sentenced in court Thursday.

Zavier Arrington was given a $1,250 fine, a psychological evaluation, and a 30 day community service sentence.

The Southern Cross Animal Rescue received a call in December that a dog was chained up in the front yard of a home on Highway 11 with no shelter, food, or water. They went to the home  to do a welfare check and when they got there they found a total of 10 dogs, nine Pit Bulls and 1 Chihuahua, living in what described as deplorable conditions.

Southern Cross held a peaceful protest outside of the courthouse prior to Arrington's trial.

Since the December rescue, one of the dogs has passed away, and the other nine are in temporary custody of SCAR.
