A few weeks ago I asked you to give me your opinion on Common Core. Some of you were emphatic about your desire to have Common Core standards removed from our schools. Like Robin who wrote: “there are too many steps to go through just to get the basic answer to a math problem. Also too much time is being wasted in class rooms using common core with its method of crowding a child's mind and making basic subjects difficult”. Sharon commented: “When common core first started being introduced to my girls their grades began to drop. Each week they learn three to four new math skills - each week it is different and the skills are never looked at again”. While she supported the concept of Common Core, Jesse said, “If a state chooses to not participate in Common Core, it should be completely decided by that state's voters”. It is apparent that the debate sparks strong emotional responses from parents. Next I will ask some local educators for their opinions and I look forward to sharing those with you.
