HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg and Petal city leaders are supporting increased efforts by one faith-based organization to help feed senior citizens and those with disabilities in the Hattiesburg area. Thursday, they issued proclamations at Christian Services, Inc. recognizing the 13th annual March for Meals, which is a nationwide celebration of the Meals on Wheels program.
Christian Services has been a Meals on Wheels distributor for several years and is expanding its program.
"We're so excited about this and so happy and appreciative that we have the City of Hattiesburg and the City of Petal backing us on that," said Catherine Jorns, director of ministries and outreach for Christian Services, Inc.
That organization is also hoping the March for Meals will attract new volunteers to take those meals to the homebound.
"It's sometimes the only visit from people (the homebound) get all day long and so, it's incredibly important," said Lora Mapp, a Meals on Wheels volunteer.
Christian Services will host a 5K run later this month to raise funds for its Meals on Wheels program. It will be held Saturday, March 21 and will begin and end at Pittman Park on E. Pine Street.
