The city of Hattiesburg recently received a grant from the Mississippi Department of Transportation to help Pine Belt school kids get to school safer.
The project know as Safe Routes to School is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson foundation with the intent of providing funds for sidewalk construction near public schools.
Sidewalks ranging from five feet wide up to eight feet wide will be constructed from Hawkins Elementary all the way to West 5th street.
The completion date for the project is unknown, but its estimated cost will be around $275,000.
