For almost four decades, The Arc of the Pine Belt has served members of the community with special needs.
Tuesday, Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee signed a proclamation declaring the month of March as Intellectual Disabilities Awareness Month.
The ceremony took place in the mayor's office with members and officers of the organization.
The Arc of the Pine Belt works to increase public awareness by providing information and help for those with developmental disabilities and their families.
"We're a minority population, thank goodness, but we'd like everybody to get involved and especially those with families that have family members with a intellectual disability, this is a way that we can get the word out there and let them know that we're here and what we do," said Betty Busbea, President of the ARC of the Pine Belt. "So it really makes us feel good when city officials, county officials, public officials and everybody gets involved and wants to be a part of what we do."
