– Southern Miss senior right-hander James McMahon (Hattiesburg, Miss.) earned Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors in an announcement by the league office on Monday.
McMahon, in just his third career start for the Golden Eagles after appearing in relief on 37 occasions over his first three seasons, threw a six-hit, complete-game shutout at Troy on Sunday. It was the first complete-game shutout by a Southern Miss hurler since Conor Fisk did it against Louisiana Tech on April 18, 2014.
In the 5-0 victory, McMahon collected a career-best outing in terms of innings worked and also tied his career-high for strikeouts with eight, in which he established the previous weekend versus Nicholls State.
The Trojans did not get more than one batter on base in an inning and no Troy player got past second base in the contest. McMahon retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced including four strikeouts during that stretch.
It was the first weekly honor for McMahon and the first C-USA Pitcher of the Week since Christian shared the honor on March 24, 2014.
