LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Schools across the country celebrated Read Across America Monday.

Students at Maddox Elementary School in Laurel were treated to story time by members of Americorp from the University of Southern Mississippi. Volunteers were on hand to read to students in conjunction with the celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday. Organizers said the event helps in stressing the importance of reading on a regular basis.

"Read across america is important because you celebrate the reading skills of students and you get kids excited about reading. It's important for children to love to ready because research shows that up until the third grade students are learning to read then after the third grade they are reading to learn," said Jessica Lucky, USM, Regional Coordinator for America Reads, MS.

Americorp is a national service organization dedicated to addressing various issues throughout the states.
