HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hundreds of people gathered in frigid temperatures Saturday morning to help raise money for The University of Southern Mississippi's Children's Center for Communication and Development. The inaugural Children's Center Classic featured 10k, 5k and one mile fun runs, all to support the center.
It helps children up to five years of age who have disabilities.
An estimated 300 runners and walkers took part.
Organizers said although the center does receive some state funding, every little bit helps.
"Nothing is ever guaranteed, so events like this race help us to ensure the longevity of our program," said Sarah Case-Price, director of the Children's Center for Communication and Development.
Case-Price said more than $20,000 was raised at the event.
