JASPER COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A rash of fires last week in Jasper County have authorities and State Fire Marshals investigating what officials said are arson fires.
According to Jasper County Sheriff Chris Sargent, these fires were within a mile of each other, and they appear to be deliberately set.
"We want the public to know that we're taking these fires very serious and are asking the public to help us and if they have any information that may help with our investigations, please give us a call," Sargent said.
Sargent said department officials are working diligently to find out who is responsible for setting these fires.
Authorities were on hand today sifting through the remnants of those blazes and going door to door, handing out leaflets to residents in the area.
These leaflets state that there could be up to a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for these fires.
Sargent said that they have increased their patrols in the area and that he is expecting six additional fire marshals to arrive on the scene Tuesday to help with the investigation.
If anyone has any information regarding these fires, they are encouraged to contact the State Fire Marshals office at (601) 359-1061 or the Jasper County Sheriff's Department at (601) 764-2588.
