Lamar Co. Planning Comm. votes yes to mining operation

LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - In a recent Lamar County Planning Commission meeting several mining petitions were passed.

Three petitions are to mine dirt on Burnt Bridge Road in District 3 of Lamar County. Affiliates of Hover Gravel Inc. petitioned the planning commission to change zoning, the land use classification, and conditional use permits of their property. They want to start a dirt mining operation on their property at 473 Burnt Bridge Road.

Senior Planner Michael Hershman believes there are currently nine other inactive or active pits on the road. He also said, that this dirt is more like a sand and clay material.

“The dirt is going to be used for foundations for houses to help support our continuing growth in the county,” said Hershman.

Lamar County Board of Supervisors tabled the petitions during the last meeting. Supervisors said the petitions are currently under advisement.

The Board of Supervisors will have the final say in choosing to accept or to reject the commission's recommendations for approval.

Though she stands at just 4-foot-10, Aimee Durn is a force for the Jones County Junior College women's soccer club. The short freshman from England is a big reason the Lady Bobcats are 5-0-1. "They say big things come in small packages and that's very true for Aimee," said tenth-year JCJC women's soccer coach Dolores Deasley.

After a week without a football game, the University of Southern Mississippi may be getting some of their walking wounded back as the Golden Eagles prepare to open Conference USA play Saturday with a visit from the University of North Texas. But USM will be down an assistant football coach. USM coach Jay Hopson confirmed Monday that running backs coach Lytrel Pollard was “not with us right now.”
