United Blood Services is calling on area residents to donate blood to help maintain blood supply inventories during this weeks winter weather events in central and north Mississippi.
Cancellation of blood drives and other related weather issues has results in a reduction of our blood product inventory by 125 units.
"We understand the difficulties donors experience when dealing with weather of this nature," said Katie Martin, Senior Donor Recruitment Representative. "Many other responsibilities can take priority. The fact is that we still need our community to rally to supply our hospitals with blood to save lives. Communities that are being affected by the winter weather are relying on our community to step up and make sure blood is available for all patients."
All blood types are welcome. Martin said platelet donors are needed as well. Platelets are used in the treatment of patients undergoing chemotherapy. Their shelf life is very short—only 5 days—while whole blood or red cell donations can last 42 days.
