HPD investigating 3 alleged rape cases in past week

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg Police are investigating three alleged rape cases in the past week.


One incident occurred in the 6500 block of U.S. Highway 49 at the Sunset Inn around 6:15 p.m. Saturday. Hattiesburg resident Joseph Burrell, 24, was arrested and charged with one count of rape according to Hattiesburg Police Lt. Jon Traxler.

Burrell is currently being housed at the Forrest County Jail awaiting his initial appearance.


According to Traxler, police are investigating another case involving the rape of a child under the age of 14. The crime was reported in the 100 block of Mill Creek on Thursday 19th, around 3: 40 p.m. According to Traxler no other information was available for the incident.


Another incident that occurred just after 6:30 a.m. Wednesday 18th was at 15 Ezekiel Street. According to Traxler there was a reported burglary in progress at the residence. The person that reported the crime later stated that her daughter was the victim of a rape.

According to Traxler, the victim was transported to Forrest General Hospital for treatment and evaluation.

Traxler also added that no other suspect information was available for that specific incident as well.

"However, the three incidents are not related in anyway whatsoever," said Traxler.
