JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The Pine Belt got some rain earlier this week, but it wasn't enough for Jones County officials to lift a burn ban that's been in effect for six days. They said residents are still prohibited from burning anything outdoors until further notice.
They said high winds and low humidity could easily turn a small trash fire into a large woods fire that could damage property.
"Just (Wednesday) morning, we had an incident where an individual started a fire and it spread across the road, approximately 200 feet and it jumped the road, and set the neighbor's yard on fire," said Dan McKenna, Jones County fire coordinator.
Mckenna said residents caught burning could be fined from $100-500.
