Hattiesburg, Miss.- William Carey University head coach Bobby Halford picked up career wins number 999 and 1,000 as his Crusaders swept the College of Saint Joseph (Vt.) on Tuesday afternoon at Milton Wheeler Field.
Halford has skippered the Carey baseball team for 30 years and has won 61.6% of his contest and averaged 34 wins per season. He is currently eighth on the NAIA active win's list.
With today's double header sweep the Crusaders have now won eight straight games, including a three game SSAC road sweep last weekend at Middle Georgia State College.
In game one the Crusaders overcame a two run deficit as they defeated the Fighting Saints, 3-2.
The Crusaders got off to a dreadful start as two first inning errors led to a pair of runs as the visitors from Vermont opened a 2-0 lead.
After the shaky start the Carey pitching staff settled down and did not allow another run the rest of the day.
Carey got on the board in the fourth inning as Tyler James (FR/Slidell, La.) led off the inning by drawing a walk. James then promptly stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Alex Buechler (SR/Omaha, Neb.) then delivered the first WCU run on a sacrifice fly to right field to score James. After a Nick Lowe (JR/Satsuma, AL) single, Michael Wells (SR/Niceville, Fla.) tied the game with RBI single to score Tyler Richardson (JR/Bluff City, Tenn.).
In the seventh inning, WCU loaded the bases on a walk and two hit batters with no outs. Wes Brown (FR/Denham Springs, La.) then hit a ground ball to third however Saint Joseph third baseman Tyler Kunzmann threw the ball away allowing Chris Murphy (FR/Defuniak Springs, Fla.) to race home for the winning run.
Buechler, who came on in relief for WCU starter Jace Belcher (SR/Quitman, Miss.), picked up the win as he struck out four of the six hitters he faced in two innings of work.
In game two, Larson Barkurn (SO/Petal, Miss.) simply overpowered Saint Joseph as the Crusaders finished off the Saints 6-0.
Leading 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Crusaders put the game away. Raul Perez (JR/Carolina, Puerto Rico) started the scoring with an RBI single and Tyler Richardson followed with a two run double off the wall to put WCU up 4-0. Alex Buechler capped the inning with an RBI to make it 5-0 WCU.
Barkurn was stellar on the mound allowing just three hits and striking out 11 in the shutout to improve to 2-0 on the season.
