Proposed East Hardy Park to be constructed in 5 phases

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -  Plans for East Hardy Park have been divided into 5 phases, and Hattiesburg Mayor, Johnny DuPree hopes once the park is developed, it will encourage more people to get up, get out, and get healthy.

“One of our goals is to make sure that people are as healthy as possible,” Mayor DuPree said. “We've been trying to make sure that if you live in Hattiesburg that you're within one mile of a park.”

The Mayor says once they have the funding to start, the construction will take place in 5 phases. The proposed 150 acre park will offer golf, a skate park, a dog park, and 3 lakes, along with many other amenities for the public to enjoy. The total project will cost around $17 million.

“It takes a while to get all this planned; every project we've had starts out this way,” said DuPree. “You look at 4th Street, Hardy Street, [the] Train Depot, all of them; it took years to actually get to a final construction phase, but you know we have to do that. If it takes years, then we'll do it, but we have to start, we have to do the planning up front, and that's what we're doing.”

The first phase of the project consists of area mostly owned by the City of Hattiesburg.
