Col. Brad Smith, commander of Camp Shelby, speaks to a monthly meeting of Forrest-Lamar Republican Women Tuesday.
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
Officials from Camp Shelby Tuesday spoke about the evolving training mission for that Army National Guard facility during a monthly meeting of Forrest-Lamar Republican Women.
Camp Shelby commander Col. Brad Smith addressed ongoing traditional training activities, but also talked about the post's new objective to help improve cyber security through the post's Open Technology Center (OTC).
It's mission is to encourage innovation, reduce costs and increase technical efficiencies in government defense and security systems by developing and adopting open source software technology. It's sponsored by the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security.
"As we move into the future, the military mission set is going to change and we are posturing ourselves to support what we consider to be future operations," said Smith
The Open Technology Center has been in operation for more than a year.
Last April, Camp Shelby concluded its decade-long federal mobilization mission.
