Hub City mayor races against clock to present departmental nominees
Mayor Johnny DuPree will be in court Monday regarding his nominees for department heads.
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
Time is ticking for Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree to present the five remaining nominees for city department heads.
Special appointed Judge Breland Hilburn ordered the mayor last month to have all five nominees presented to the council by this coming Monday, February 23.
The only council meeting between now and then is Tuesday, and there is only one nominee placed on the agenda. Unless the mayor makes the other four nominations from the floor Tuesday or a special-called meeting takes place before Monday, DuPree could be held in contempt of court, which orders a fine and/or jail time.
DuPree nominated current Purchasing Department Division Manager Verlina Underwood for the city clerk position, which has not been filled full-time since former city clerk Eddie Myers resigned in August 2013 after the controversial mayoral election.
Underwood has simultaneously been nominated for Director of Administration. That position was also filled by Myers.
The other four unfilled appointments include police chief, city attorney, public defender and judge pro tem.
