HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The City of Hattiesburg is inviting everyone to come out next Tuesday night for the Hub City's annual celebration of African-American history.
A Black History Month event at the Train Depot will feature live entertainment. Keynote speaker will be Mississippi civil rights pioneer Charles Evers.
Each person attending is encouraged to bring their own covered dish.
"It's just very important that we remember our past," said Chinika Hughes, public relations coordinator with the City of Hattiesburg. "It's important that the kids coming up these days understand their history, understand where they come from, because you can't move forward if you don't know where you came from and that's the message we're trying to get out to every citizen," she said.
The event starts at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
