BROOKLYN, MS (WDAM) - In a shocking move that surprised the Brooklyn community along with the rest of the Pine Belt, longtime Forrest County AHS girls basketball coach Michael Thornton was told his contract will not be renewed for the 2015-2016 season.
Thornton has been the head coach of the Lady Aggies for the past 26 seasons posting a winning percentage of 66 percent (515-260).
Since the 2011-2012 season FCAHS is 117-22 including a trip to the 4A state championship in the 2011-2012 campaign.
The team is 17-7 so far this year and has a 5-5 region record and is a lock for the playoffs.
We talked to coach Thornton over the phone earlier today and this is what he had to say about the announcement.
"(I) was extremely disappointed for my family, my wife and kids and for my team. I mean for this to be announced a week before division tournament was a devastating blow. When you put 26 years of your life dedicated to a school to have, to be done the way I have been done is extremely disappointing."
Forrest county AHS superintendent J.J. Morgan was not available for comment on the decision to not renew Thornton's contract.
