WAYNE COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Continued dry and windy conditions have prompted Wayne County officials to issue a county-wide burn ban until further notice.
The Wayne County Board of Supervisors issued the ban Thursday morning after meeting with county fire officials in a special called meeting.
Those fire officials said the ban was needed to protect lives and property. They said the county has had several out-of-control grass fires recently. One of those fires destroyed a home in the Maynor Creek Community just a few days ago.
Officials said anyone caught burning trash or debris outdoors will likely get a warning from law enforcement for a first offense. But, they said a second offense could lead to a fine of up to $500.
