HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
Southern Miss signed two local products from Oak Grove in offensive lineman Ty Pollard and linebacker Isaiah Spencer on national signing day.
The Golden Eagles already have two former Warriors on their team in the form of cornerback Picasso Nelson Jr. and offensive lineman Brian Long.
Eleven players on the current roster hail from Pine Belt area schools including three from Bassfield and one each from Columbia, West Jones, Wayne County, Forrest County AHS, Poplarville and Tylertown.
"I love recruiting kids from great programs where a guy like Nevil Barr raves about. We want as many of his players that we think can play for us," Todd Monken said after the team locked down 24 new recruits for his program.
"We want as many guys from Bassfield as we can get and as many guys from Petal and as many guys, Coach (Tony Vance) has done a great job down the street at Hattiesburg, from really good programs where they've had great structure. We'll always start there first."
USM had four seniors on last seasons roster from the Pine Belt.
