This is a news release from Pearl River Community College
Reigning NJCAA Division II national champion LSU-Eunice proved more than worthy of its No. 2 softball ranking, sweeping Pearl River Community College's Lady Wildcats 4-0 and 20-0 (five innings) to remain unbeaten at 7-0. PRCC, which swept Alabama Southern CC 8-0 (five innings) and 7-1 a day earlier in its season openers in Poplarville, evened its overall record to 2-2.
Ace pitcher Raven Cole iced the sweep with the lopsided shutout in the nightcap of the doubleheader with a no-hit effort, striking out 13 of the 15 Lady Wildcat batters she faced and and walked none. But The River faired better in the opening contest, as hurler Rachel Hickman of Poplarville high struck out eight Lady Bengals, while giving up seven hits. In the first game, things were scoreless for the first two-and-a-half innings before Taylor Boulet scored the go-ahead run off back-to-back errors in the third, then Madison Edmonston reached on a one-out bunt in the fourth and scored off Destin Vicknair's double a base hit later to make it 2-0. Vicknair smashed a two-run homer in the sixth to end the scoring.
Vicknair got the win in going the distance, giving up three hits, striking out eight, and walking five, while Hickman (1-1) got the loss. She also went the distance, giving up seven hits. Hannah Holloway of Petal High had two singles, while Skylar Cook of St. Amant High (La.) had a base hit for PRCC. Vicknair paced LSU-E at the plate with a home run and a double, while Boulet, Allison Daigle, Edmonston, Abigail Ohlin, and Carmisha Payton all had base hits.
The Lady Bengals played error free, while the Lady Wildcats had two defensive miscues. In the lopsided nightcap game, LSU-E scored four runs in the bottom of the first off six walks and a single, then added eight in the second, including a grand slam homer by Cole. The Lady Bengals ended the scoring with eight more runs in the third, including a two-run homer by Jessica Thomas, a Kayla Davidson double, singles by Edmonston and Cole, an error, and six base on balls. Danielle Barton of Harrison Central High (0-1) started and pitched two frames in picking up the loss. She gave up a hit, struck out one, and walked 11, while Cook relieved in the third. She gave up 13 hits, struck out one, and walked four.
Cole paced LSU-E's 14-hit attack with a homer and a single (three RBIs), while Daggett tripled and singled (two RBIs), Boulet (one RBI) and Davidson both doubled and singled, Camille Quebodeaux and Vicknair (two RBIs) had two singles each, Thomas homered (four RBIs), and Ohlin singled (one RBI). Daigle also had an RBI for the Lady Bengals. Again, Pearl River committed two errors in the contest, while LSU-E played error free. The Lady Wildcats return to action Tuesday when it travels to Alabama Southern in Monroeville, Ala, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader rematch before hosting the annual Wildcat Invitational Tournament Feb. 13-14 (Friday and Saturday) in Poplarville. The River will host East Mississippi, Faulkner State (Ala.), Itawamba, and LSU-E in the two-day event in Lady Wildcat Stadium. --- 30 --- PEARL RIVER @ LSU-EUNICE (La.)NJCAA Baseball Doubleheader PlayedFeb. 3, 2015 in Eunice, LA GAME ONEPearl River (2-1) 000 000 0 -- 0 3 2LSU-Eunice (6-0) 001 102 X -- 4 7 0 WP: Destin Vicknair (NA), starter, distance, 3 hits, 8 K, 5 BB.Also Pitching: None.Catcher: Katie Flowers.
