JACKSON, MS (WDAM) - Multiple sources confirmed to WDAM that former Republican Senator Tim Johnson of Madison will run for Lieutenant Governor as a Democrat.

Johnson, who also served on the Madison County Board of Supervisors, will announce his candidacy at 2 p.m. at the state capitol Wednesday.

Twitter has been buzzing about the announcement after Rep. David Baria (D- Bay St. Louis) tweeted the following message Tuesday night:

"A prominent MS Republican will switch parties and announce candidacy for statewide office as a Democrat tomorrow at 2 p.m. at MS Capitol."

Johnson, also known for his Elvis impersonations, had an unsuccessful run for Central District Transportation Commissioner in 2011.
