Free tax filing available to retirees, low income individuals

Free tax filing is offered through April 15 in Forrest and Lamar counties. Free tax filing is offered through April 15 in Forrest and Lamar counties.
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is offering free tax filing services throughout Forrest and Lamar Counties.

AARP Tax Aide services are set up for retirees and those with low to mid-income, including students. The free service includes preparing the tax return and electronically filing it.

"All of our preparers are certified by IRS (Internal Revenue Service)," said Larry Grant. "Everyone is required to take an exam each year, and we just finished that two weeks ago."

In order to get a return filed, individuals must bring the following items:

  • W-2, or Social Security or pension statement if retired
  • Bank account and routing numbers
  • Photo ID
  • Social security number, including SSN of any dependents
  • last year's return, if applicable

The AARP Tax Aide sites will be set up through April 15 at the following locations:

  • Sigler Center, Hattiesburg

    • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 12-3:30 p.m.
  • C.E. Roy Community Center, Hattiesburg
    • Wednesday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Harvey Baptist Church, Petal
    • Tuesday, Thursday 12-3:30 p.m.
    • Saturday 9 a.m.-12 noon (February 7, 14 and 21 only)
  • Purvis Library
    • Tuesday 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. (February 17, March 3, 17 and 31 only)
  • Lumberton Library

    • Tuesday 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. (February 10 and 24, March 10 and 24, April 7 only)

    Just after midnight on July 21, the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to a fatality on Hwy 53 in Pearl River County. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene.  According to authorities, a 2015 Chevrolet Sonic was traveling north of Highway 53 when it crossed the center line and crashed head on with a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado driving in the southbound lane.
