Reward offered for stolen antique valuables

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A truck full of valuable antiques was broken into last night at the Motel 6 in Hattiesburg.

The driver was transporting antique instruments from Connecticut to Texas. The owner of the antiques said the driver went out to walk her dogs around midnight and found that her truck had been broken into.

The truck driver immediately called the police and together they went into the truck to find that a box of instruments and a standing bass were missing.

“These instruments are a form of American Folk Art. They are homemade instruments made in Appalachia by the people up in the hills. These are actual working instruments that they would fasten for themselves,” said Owner of MacKay and Field Antiques Susan MacKay. “They were all made between 1850 and 1950 and many of them utilize things that have been thrown out. There is one that was made out of a old tin oil can, there are a couple that were made out of cigar boxes, and there is a really wonderful guitar that is made out of a bed pan.”

Mackay said the stolen instruments together are valued at approximately$10,000 which is why she said significant reward will be given to anyone that leads to the safe return of any or all of the instruments.

If you have a tip on the instruments whereabouts you can call Mackay at 860-933-4735.
