Sarah Kavanaugh received a social justice award for her petition to get a harmful additive out of Gatorade products.
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
A Hattiesburg High School student received the social justice award from Emory University's Barkley Forum.
Sarah Kavanaugh started a petition in 2012 to remove brominated vegetable oil from Gatorade. Because of the overwhelming support the campaign garnered on change.org, Pepsi and Coke removed the harmful additive from all their products.
Kavanaugh's latest award was presented at a National Forensics tournament last week.
"Teenagers don't normally think about their importance, and how much change they can make," said Kavanaugh. "So it's really opened my eyes to notice that if you are passionate about something and you speak up about something, people will normally support you. No matter what your age, age is not important."
