Former Jones County teacher sentenced to 5 years in prison

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A former Northeast Jones High School teacher will be serving 5 years in prison.

Toby Richey, 39, was convicted Friday for sending inappropriate photos and text messages to a child. According to Jones County Assistant District Attorney Kristen Martin, the child exploitation charge stemmed from accusations that occurred between August 2011 and July 2013.  

Richey will now serve 15 years with MDOC, 5 years to serve day for day and 5 years post release.

Martin said Richey will have to register as a sex offender once he's released.

Richey was employed by Wayne County Schools in 2013 at the time of his arrest. He taught at Northeast Jones High School for 10 years prior to that. According to Jones County Investigator Sgt. Tonya Madison, the victim was 15 in 2011 when the incident first occurred.
