This is a news release by William Carey athletics

UPDATE: Fixed earlier typo in opening line.

Hattiesburg, Miss.-It was not the opening day William Carey University was hoping far as they dropped both games of Friday afternoon's doubleheader with No. 9 Missouri Baptist University.

In game one six walks proved costly as WCU fell to the Spartans, 3-2.

WCU struck first in the bottom of the second inning as Nick Lowe (JR/Satsuma, AL) led off the inning with a double to left field and Ramon Cedeno (SR/Orlando, Fla.) followed with a single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Pinch runner Charlie Belair (FR/Belle Chase, La) scored the first run thanks to a wild pitch and Larson Barkurn (SO/Petal, Miss.) followed with an RBI double to score Cedeno to put WCU up 2-0.

The Spartans answered in the top of the third as Eli Roundtree drove in one run with an RBI single and Aaron Pangilian added a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2.

Missouri Baptist loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning but reliever Chris Miller (JR/Slidell, La.) worked WCU out of the jam and in the seventh a 6 -4-3 double play by freshman infielders Tyler James (FR/Slidell, La.) (2B) and Wes Brown (FR/Denham Springs, La.) (SS) denied the Spartans yet again.

In the top of the ninth things fell apart for WCU as a hit batter and three walks led to the go ahead run for the Spartans.

In game two the Crusaders surrendered fourteen hits as they dropped the night cap, 9-1.

Trailing the 2-0 going into the top of the fifth inning the Spartan offense erupted for four runs capped off by Brent Zimmerman's two run home run. Missouri Baptist would add two more runs in the sixth inning and another in the seventh to open a 9-0 lead. Carey scored their lone run of the game in eighth as Cedeno scored on a wild pitch.

WCU and Missouri Baptist wrap up their three game series tomorrow with a single game beginning at 1:00 pm at Crusader Field.
