COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - Today a group of students took their service project day to help with the debris cleanup in Marion County.
Nearly 300 students from Columbia High School initiated a school wide service learning project aimed at the cleanup effort following the devastating tornado that struck Marion county on Christmas Eve.
"A lot of schools across the country do service learning projects so this is not a field day, they are actually probably working physically harder today than they have any day that they have sat in the classroom. And so we decided, what better service project to do is to go out and help our own community," said Sheila Burbridge, principal of Columbia High School.
Principal Burbridge also said that the students will take this experience and apply it towards all aspects of their school subjects.
