HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The University of Southern Mississippi is touting a new campus facility which focuses on the academic needs of student-veterans and their family members.

An open house was held Friday for the Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families.

The Center includes a student lounge and computer lab and helps student-veterans with information about scholarships, work-study opportunities, job referrals and community engagement.

"We've got a student veterans association where they can become a member of something, essentially like they were in the military," said Doug Robinson, veteran outreach coordinator with the Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families. "They were a part of something larger and now today, they can be a part of something larger, which is the academic success they have at USM and also with our veteran community here," Robinson said.

The Center is located near the campus on Morningside Drive and it opened last October.

As a freshman quarterback playing behind one of the best athletes to come through Columbia Academy in recent years, Thomas Erastus “Ras” Pace got his first career start in what was arguably the Cougars’ biggest game of the 2016 season. “I thought I did a pretty good job handing the ball off,” said Pace of his starting debut in a second-round MAIS AAA playoff game in place of the inured Wiley Cleland.
