Birthday Book Bonanza benefits children

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Jan. 16 not only marked Jas N Smith's birthday but it kicked off the Birthday Book Bonanza.

"I decided to ask all of my friends and family to, instead of buying me a gift for my birthday, buy a book for the school libraries," said Jas N Smith, communication director for Hattiesburg Public Schools.

Smith, an avid reader, asked the librarians in each of the district's schools to compile a list of books that they needed. These included series of stories that were popular among the kids as well as educational literature. They spanned reading levels, from beginner through high school. To his delight, as soon as the lists were posted, the books began to arrive at Smith's door.

"People have just embraced it and run with it," he said. "We have really great kids and they don't always have the greatest resources, either at home or at school."

So Smith is doing all he can to put books in these kids' hands. So far he has collected just over 200 books and will continue to accept donations through next Friday, Feb. 6. The books will be distributed among the district's schools, six elementary, one middle, and one high school.
