LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A Monday night traffic stop along Interstate 59 in Lamar County resulted in one arrest and the discovery of more than 7 pounds of cocaine.

Saul Longoria, 35, of San Antonio, Texas, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute in connection to the powder cocaine authorities recovered from his vehicle.

According to Lamar County Sheriff's Department Maj. Brad Weathers, interdiction units stopped Longoria traveling northbound on I-59 near the 48 mile marker Monday evening.

According to Weathers, officers spoke with Longoria, and a search involving two K9s alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics. During their search, officers recovered cocaine that was stored in the engine compartment of the truck.

The street value of the cocaine seized is estimated at more than $250,000 according to Weathers.

“It is instances like this that our department is thankful to have interdiction units working the interstate,” said Weathers. “Again, this just proves what a valuable asset they are to the department, as well as the impact they make with the drugs they pull off the streets,” said Weathers.

Longoria was transported to the Forrest County Jail, where he will be taken into federal custody in connection to his charge.
