LightHouse Rescue Mission, located at 204 Eupora Street in Hattiesburg, was made by design to help homeless, struggling mothers with children.
“I got saved back in 1993 and God gave me a desire to serve,” said Ken Thronson, Director of LightHouse Rescue. “I prayed for 6 years on what God would have me to do, and after six years of praying constantly, God reveled to me to start Lighthouse.”
LightHouse provides shelter, food and academic help for mothers that strive to acquire their G.E.D. or community college classes. The mission group also provides ‘life skill' classes such as money management classes, parenting skills, and conflict resolution.
“This is actually a program where the children and their mothers come and live here and we provide a safe and stable place for our families to be,” Thronson said. “We want to offer hope and stability and new beginnings for our families.”
The facility can hold roughly 45 residents and provides the tenants with a study area, computer room, a kitchen, a dining area, and even a nursery. LightHouse mission relies heavily on outside help for volunteers and donations.
“There are always volunteer opportunities; maybe teaching some of the classes, helping with child care,” said Thronson. “There's always paper products needed, cleaning supplies needed, food, we're always in need of canned food, and those are on-going things.”
