Blue Mountain, Miss.- Donta Pittman (JR/Waynesboro, Miss.) poured in a game high 26 points as No. 18 William Carey returned to their winning ways with a 74-69 win over Blue Mountain College in SSAC action Saturday night.
The Crusaders got off to a quick start as Leo Garrett (JR/Brookhaven, Miss.) scored 9 of the Crusaders first 16 points to help WCU open a 16-6 lead with 14:03 to play in the half. The Toppers answered back with an 18-2 run to open a four point lead with less than seven minutes left in the half.
Garrett single handedly brought the Crusaders back hitting back to back threes to tie the game at 24. Moments later WCU moved back in front as Garrett picked up a steal and found Reshad Bickham (SR/Jackson, Miss.) for layup to put WCU up 26-24 with 6:10 left in the half.
The Toppers tied the game on three different occasions in the final five minutes of the half but WCU scored the last six points to go into the half up 34-28.
WCU stretched the lead to as many as 10 points midway through half then held off a Topper rally by going 24 for 27 at the foul line in the second half, including a 7 for 8 mark in the final minute. Carey finished the game going 30 for 33 (91%) at the charity stripe
Garrett joined Pittman in double figures with 19 points.
WCU returns to action on Tuesday as they host Dillard (La.). Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm at Clinton Gym.
Blue Mountain, Miss- William Carey University snapped a three game skid with a hard fought 64-60 win over Blue Mountain College in
SSAC action Saturday afternoon.
With the win WCU improves to 7-8 overall and 5-5 in SSAC play.
The Crusaders were sluggish as the start as Blue Mountain raced to and early 7-2 lead. A pair of free throws from Shania Posey (FR/Ellisville, Miss.) and three pointer of Samara Dingisiwayo cut the lead to 9-7with 13:05 to play.
The Toppers pushed the lead back to 19-13 with 5:29 left in the half then WCU made their move. Dingishwayo drilled a pair of three's and Khadejah Buxton (SO/Ellisville, Miss.) added a third as Carey put together 15-4 run to close the half up 28-23.
Carey stretched the lead to seven early in the half before Toppers roared back to take a 33-32 lead with 15:45 to play. The Topper lead was short lived as Posey's layup on the next WCU possession put the Crusaders back in front. Carey then pushed the lead to 42-33 thanks to back-to-back three's from Dinigswayo and Shandon Huddleston (JR/Bay Springs, Miss.) to cap a 10-0 WCU run.
The Crusaders maintained their nine point lead until the final minute when Blue Mountain made one last push and cut the lead to 62-60 with :22 seconds left to play. Carey buckled down on the defensive end as Posey picked up a pair of steals to deny the Toppers.
Dingiswayo led WCU with 16 points. Tiffany Sims (SR/Mendenhall, Miss) finished with 13 points and Shandon Huddleston added 10 points.
WCU returns to action on Tuesday as they host Dillard (La.) in non- conference action. Tip-off is set for 5:00 pm at Clinton Gym.
