HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The American Red Cross and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity have made a new pledge to increase cooperation between their organizations.
An official Memorandum of Understanding was signed at The University of Southern Mississippi on Saturday during an annual state convention of the Mississippi District of Alpha Phi Alpha.
The agreement established a new framework for cooperation and support which will allow the Red Cross to mobilize volunteers to help with emergency preparedness, volunteer training and community blood drives.
"What it means to us in the community is that it's putting more volunteers and boots on the ground, for whenever there is a large-scale disaster or everyday disasters that happen," said Sandra Hodge, CEO of the Mississippi Region of the American Red Cross
"Our alumni members are being certified as volunteers, so God forbid if something happens, then we can have a team that can assist the Red Cross all across the State of Mississippi to support them and families and make our state stronger," said Rickey Thigpen, Mississippi District Director of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Also Saturday morning, American Red Cross representatives presented a disaster services overview to fraternity members.
