COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - Congressman Steven Palazzo is offering words of encouragement to those who are still recovering from the deadly December tornadoes that struck Columbia and other parts of the Pine Belt.
The storms, which hit one month ago Friday, produced an EF3 twister that damaged or destroyed dozens of homes and businesses in Marion County and an EF2 tornado that produced similar destruction in Jones County.
Five people were killed.
Palazzo (R-4th Dist.) said that although the storms were terrible, they helped bring people together.
"One thing is obvious in Marion County and in most counties here in Mississippi, the community came out and embraced those who lost everything in the blink of an eye," he said. "And it's neighbors taking care of neighbors, that's why this part of the state, this part of the world, is so special. We take care of one another," he said.
Palazzo toured some of the damage in Columbia Friday, after he presented several medals to a Marion County World War Two veteran.
