Southern Miss Black History Month Programs Begin Feb. 2

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The following is a news release from The University of Southern Mississippi

The University of Southern Mississippi's Office of Multicultural Programs and Services will give students an opportunity to learn more about African American history and culture in February through its Black History Month programs.

Valencia Walls, coordinator of the Office of Multicultural Programs, said African American history is important for all students to learn. “I hope that through the programs we offer, our students will gain a greater respect and understanding of African American history and the responsibility that comes along with it,” she said.

Alloric Riley, a Southern Miss student, has worked closely with the planning of Black History Month events. “I hope our students understand that we can't depend on the hopes and dreams of the past to make the difference of tomorrow,” he said.

“A Night at the Cotton Club” is the month's kick-off event on Monday, Feb. 2. The Department of Theatre will serve as the event's partner for the second year in a row. “The Eagle Awards” program on Monday, Feb. 23 will recognize “unsung heroes” who have contributed to the betterment of the University community.
