5K run walk to benefit Tourism Management Scholarship Fund

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - This is a news release from USM.

The first “Sweethearts for Sweetpea” 5K Run/Walk will be held Saturday, Jan. 31 at 8 a.m. at the Longleaf Trace Gateway located across from The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus on West Fourth Street.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Elaina Spradley Skinner “Sweetpea” Scholarship Fund in the Southern Miss College of Business for students studying tourism management.

Registration will be at 7:15 a.m. and an awards ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m., both at the Longleaf Trace Gateway. Entry cost is $25. For more information, call 601.297.3546 or e-mailjlspradley@comcast.net.

    The University of Southern Mississippi ended Saturday’s regular-season baseball finale at Marshall University the same way it started, with a bang. The 18th-ranked Golden Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate in both the second and ninth innings, scoring eight runs in each, as USM finished off a first-ever sweep of the Thundering Herd on its home turf with a 18-9 victory at Epling Stadium.

    A man is recovering from injuries after he claims he was beaten by officers with the Laurel Police Department. Thirty-six-year-old James Barnett indicated the incident took place on Tuesday, May 15.
