HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg Public Schools held it's district wide Spelling Bee Friday at N.R. Burger Middle School
Over 20 students from around Hattiesburg competed for the district championship and the title of best speller.
The competition went 19 rounds with Brianna Moss of Grace Christian Elementary winning the championship.
”One of the things that we really like about this is that it helps our children learn new words, grow their vocabulary, it improves literacy for them and helps them be able to become a better reader," said Director of Federal Programs Dr. Vicki Kibodeaux. "Since they know many of these words they have to study the definitions and the parts of speech so they just become more literate.”
The winning word for Brianna was "wah-hee-neh"
(WA-"HE"-NAY) w-a-h-i-n-e meaning female surfer.
The Forrest County Spelling Bee which will include Petal, FCAHS and Hattiesburg is to be held later in the month of February.
