PERRY COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Sheriff Jimmy Dale Smith has been in law enforcement since 1989 and with the Perry County Sheriff's Department since 1993. Smith said he wants to continue to build bonds with other local law enforcement and the community.
"This is my second term as Sheriff; I've made many improvements inside the sheriff's department," Sheriff Jimmy Dale Smith said. "I've made contacts with other departments that we didn't have in the past that we do have now. We worked well with those departments and we try to maintain the integrity of the office."
A grant recently helped the Sheriff's Department obtain Kevlar vests, helmets, and a shield all worth about $10,000 at no cost to tax payers. Sheriff Jimmy Dale Smith will be listed on the ballot as a democrat. Smith said he'd like to be able to work with the Board of Supervisors to get more officers on the force.
"One thing I'd really like to expound upon inside the sheriff's department is the image of the department," Smith said. "Making it better, being able to put more people on the street, I know we're under budget constraints, but public safety is a number one priority in my book."
