This is a public service announcement from the Jones County Sheriff's Department.

The Jones County Sheriff's Department is hosting a Church Security and Safety Workshop, Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at the Jones County Sheriff's Department Training Center, beginning at 6:00PM.  

The workshop will be conducted by professionals from the Jones County Sheriff's Department in the areas of child safety and well-being, child safety protocol and securing private grounds.  The workshop is free of charge and opened to any officials from any church in the Pine Belt.  The information provided will be beneficial to pastors, deacons, lay-leaders and those in charge of the infants, children and youth programs.  Materials will be provided.  The Training Center is located at 130 N. 12th Ave. in Laurel.

    The University of Southern Mississippi ended Saturday’s regular-season baseball finale at Marshall University the same way it started, with a bang. The 18th-ranked Golden Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate in both the second and ninth innings, scoring eight runs in each, as USM finished off a first-ever sweep of the Thundering Herd on its home turf with a 18-9 victory at Epling Stadium.

    A man is recovering from injuries after he claims he was beaten by officers with the Laurel Police Department. Thirty-six-year-old James Barnett indicated the incident took place on Tuesday, May 15.
