HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Southern Miss is one of the top universities in the country for producing new nationally certified teachers.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has ranked USM sixth in the nation for the number of board certified teachers in 2014.

National Board Certification gives teachers a chance to achieve standards above those required by the state.

Board certification is available from pre-k through the 12th grade in 25 certificate areas.

"All the research shows that students of teachers that are National Board certified have higher test scores and other higher academic achievements," said Robin Atwood, director of the World Class Teacher Program at USM and the Southern Miss Writing Project. "Schools who have a large number of National Board certified teachers, there's greater collegiality in the schools, lots more collaboration among the faculty," she said.

More than 110,000 teachers in all 50 states have achieved National Board Certification.
