Hattiesburg, Miss.- Emmanuel Davis (JR/Buckatunna, Miss.) poured in 17 points as No. 20 William Carey University improved to 5-1 in SSAC with a 63-60 win over Brewton Parker College Saturday night at Clinton Gym.
In the first half WCU opened the game with a 10-2 run but the Barons answered with 12 straight points to open a 14-10 lead. Carey answered as Joseph Cunningham (JR/Moss Point, Miss.) scored five quick points to put WCU back in front 20-18. Leading 26-24 the Crusaders put together 8-1 run to open a 34-25 lead with 3:36 to play.
Brewton Parker trimmed the lead to 38-33 at the half eventually retook the lead at 51-50 with 8:15 to play in the game. Trailing 60-59 with 2:07 to play, Deione Weeks (JR/Horn Lake, Miss.) came up with a key steal and Leo Garrett (JR/Brookhaven, Miss.) capitalized with a bucket in the lane to put Carey up 61-60.
In the final seconds WCU put the game away for good as Emmanuel Davis scored on an offensive rebound put back to make it 63-60.
The WCU defense was stifling down the stretch as they held the Barons scoreless for the final four minutes of the game.
Cory Jackson (JR/Biloxi, Miss.) joined Davis in double figures with 13 points. Joseph Cunningham chipped in with 10 points.
The Crusaders are back in action next Thursday as they host Belhaven University in SSAC action at Clinton Gym. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
