COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - Hundreds of people Saturday responded to calls on social media to help clean up storm debris from around streets and highways in the Columbia area.
The Columbia Strong organization asked for volunteers to lend a hand as part of its "Operation Clean Sweep."
Organizers estimated nearly 500 people from across the state and elsewhere gathered trash bags and picked up insulation, paper and tree branches. The bags were placed alongside the roads to be removed later.
Meanwhile, dozens of other Marion County residents who suffered storm damage got rid of their old household hazardous waste products at Columbia's old city barn Saturday.
The Mississippi Dept. of Environmental Quality was there, accepting items such as household chemicals, used oil, refrigerators and televisions.
A professional waste disposal company will take the products and destroy or recycle them properly.
